When it comes to building muscle, this is usually the result of progressive overload, which occurs when you progressively increase the weights over a series of weeks while working out. Muscle stimulators work your muscles without the use of weights.

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), also known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or electromyostimulation, is the elicitation of muscle contraction using electric impulses. The impulses are generated by a device and delivered through electrodes on the skin in direct proximity to the muscles to be stimulated. The impulses mimic the action potential coming from the central nervous system, causing the muscles to contract. The electrodes are generally pads that adhere to the skin. EMS is both a form of electrotherapy and of muscle training. It is cited by important authors as complementary technique for sport training, and there is published research on the results obtained. In the United States, EMS devices are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Russian Stimulators are also used for muscle strengthening. It was originally developed by the Russian Olympic Team for Muscle Mass Enhancement. Russian muscle stimulation provides deeper muscle penetration and causes a more complete, strong, and intense contraction of muscle fibers. Russian Muscle Stimulation is similar to Electrical Muscle Stimulator. However, Russian Stimulators have a higher frequency of 2500 Hz divided into 50 Hz packets that allows for a deeper, stronger, yet less painful contraction of the muscle fibers. Russian Stimulation is often used to treat spinal cord injuries, scoliosis, chronic muscular pain conditions, muscle spasms, and edema.
